Premium Prize Bonds Pakistan: The Complete Registered Bond Guide
What is a Premium Prize Bond?
Premium Prize Bonds are modern, registered prize-linked savings instruments issued by National Savings Pakistan. Unlike legacy bearer bonds, Premium bonds are registered directly in the name of the investor, linked to their CNIC and bank account. Available in Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 40,000 denominations, they offer double security: the bond cannot be lost or claimed by anyone else, and it provides both bi-annual profit payouts and a chance to win huge jackpot cash prizes.
💡 Premium prize bonds offer registered security, regular returns, and jackpot eligibility in a single product.
How Premium Prize Bonds Work: Registration & Payouts
When you purchase a Premium Prize Bond, you submit an application form along with your CNIC, bank details (IBAN), and a designated nominee's information. The bond is registered in your name in the central database of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). Any winnings from the quarterly draws, as well as the guaranteed bi-annual profit, are credited directly into your registered bank account automatically, eliminating the need to physically submit the bond for claims.
✅ Winnings and interest are paid directly to your bank account — no physical claim forms required.
Annual Return & Profit Rates (Rs. 25,000 & Rs. 40,000)
Premium bonds offer a bi-annual profit payout in addition to draw prizes. Currently, the Rs. 25,000 Premium Prize Bond offers an official profit rate of 5.84% per annum. The profit is paid out on a bi-annual basis (every six months), resulting in a profit payment rate of 2.92% of the face value per period. The Rs. 40,000 Premium Prize Bond also carries its own specific profit rate announced by the government. These profit payouts are subject to FBR withholding tax deductions based on active taxpayer status (15% for filers and 30% for non-filers). Note that Premium bonds do not pay monthly profit; payouts occur strictly twice a year on scheduled dates.
💰 Enjoy a steady 5.84% annual profit rate paid bi-annually, alongside entry into multi-million rupee draws.
How to Calculate Premium Bond Profit
Profit is computed on the total face value of premium bonds held. The basic formula is: Semi-Annual Profit = (Face Value × Annual Profit Rate) ÷ 2
For example, if you hold Rs. 100,000 worth of Rs. 25,000 Premium bonds (4 bonds), your annual gross profit is Rs. 5,840, translating to a gross payment of Rs. 2,920 every six months. After withholding tax, active filers receive Rs. 2,482 (15% tax), while non-filers receive Rs. 2,044 (30% tax) bi-annually.
📊 Save tax by remaining active on the FBR Active Taxpayers List (ATL) to maximize your returns.
Premium Bonds vs. Regular Bearer Bonds
Regular bearer bonds (Rs. 100 to Rs. 1,500) are physical cash-like certificates that carry no owner name. If lost or stolen, bearer bonds cannot be recovered or blocked. They do not pay any annual return or profit, only draw prizes. Conversely, Premium bonds are registered, fully secure, pay bi-annual profit, and credit payouts directly to bank accounts. For serious long-term savers, Premium registered bonds are a significantly better and safer option.
🔒 Registered security makes Premium bonds far superior for large-sum investments compared to bearer certificates.
